Alex Birney, Ellinwood, Kan., has signed a letter of intent to play basketball at Bethany College for the 2010-2011 academic year.

Birney is a 5'11" 145 lb. point guard from Ellinwood High School. There he played basketball, football and golf all four years. He second team all-league basketball honors three years and all-state honors two years. He also was an all-league wide receiver.

Birney averaged 15 ppg. and six rpg. He shot 43 percent from the field, 78 percent from the line and 33 percent from the three-point range.

Bethany head basketball coach Clair Oleen said he is pleased that Birney has chosen Bethany College. "Alex is a fine young man and student," Oleen said.

Birney is the son of Jennifer McMillen and Bryant Birney. He has a 3.75 high school GPA. At Bethany he plans to study athletic training.
