The Bethany College men's soccer team ended their season
Saturday with a 1-3 post season tournament game loss to county rival McPherson
College.
The Bulldogs put two on the board in the first half before
the Swedes' Wesley Laney scored. McPherson went on to add one more in the first
half. Both teams remained scoreless in the second half of the game.
With shots on goal for the Swedes were Laney, a freshman
from Pleasanton, Texas; senior Gildardo Navarro, South Lake Tahoe, Texas;
sophomore Johnny Nuthall, Reno, Nev.; senior Jorge Escobar, Emporia, Kan., and
freshman Scott Jumeaux, Austriland, Australia. Bethany tallied 20 total shots
to McPherson's 21.
Senior keeper Alonzo Cordova, Oklahoma City, Okla., played
the majority of the game in the net with nine saves and three goals allowed.
The Swedes end their season 5-3-1 in conference play and
6-10-2 overall.
Bethany began their season with a double-overtime tie versus
Oklahoma Wesleyan University Sept. 3. The Swedes would lose five straight
before a Sept. 21 win over York College. Bethany would lose their first two
conference matchups against Kansas Weslayan and Ottawa University in early
October before capturing their first
conference win over Southwestern College. The team suffered another conference
loss to University of Saint Mary before four wins and a tie the last half of
the season landed the Swedes the fourth-place seed in the KCAC post-season
tournament.
The 5-3-1 KCAC record is the team's best since their 8-1
conference record in 2004. Following that season, Bethany would be winless in
conference play three of the next six years, with only one KCAC win in 2005 and
three last season.
