The Bethany College #1 doubles team of Kane Olsen and Marcelo Alecio qualified for the individual singles/doubles NAIA National tournament Oct. 13-16th in Mobile by winning the Intercollegiate Tennis Association/NAIA Central-West Region tournament.
According to Bethany Head Tennis Coach, Vic Bateman, the winners of the eight NAIA regions across the United States are the only players invited to the October tournament and will play in a draw to crown the NAIA individual singles and doubles champions. The winners of that tournament will go into a four-person/team draw to play against the NCAA DII, DIII and Junior College national champions to crown a small college "Super Bowl" champion. That winner goes into the NCAA Division I National tournament in one of the more unique events in all sports where any player from any college in the USA can win the tournament.
"Kane and Marcelo's road to the ITA Regional Title included wins over the #1 teams from Missouri Valley and the #1 team from Graceland University. Kane and Marcelo are the first two men from the KCAC to qualify for the ITA National Tourney in the last 20 years," Bateman said.
Bateman said men's tennis at Bethany this season are looking tough and are hoping for a top 10 or op 15 NAIA rating this spring. "We have the deepest team we have had in years," Bateman said. He added that Bethany's #4 singles, Jack Schoeman, made it to the ITA singles final as an unseeded player in the initial draw.
Of the ITA regional tournament, Bateman said Bethany had an impressive showing.
"Our guys and girls had a great weekend and showed the depth of our program. We had three men in the quarterfinals of singles and two semifinalists in both singles and doubles. Kane and Marcelo are great representatives of Bethany tennis to send to such a prestigious tournament."
