During the men’s weight throw, Svaty and Whitcomb fed off of each other’s energy as each set personal bests in the event. In fact, Svaty’s first place throw of 55-03.00 shattered the previous indoor record of 53-06.00 that was set in 1994. Meanwhile, Whitcomb just missed besting the old mark with his second place throw of 53-03.00.
Also throwing for the men in his first weight competition, senior Joe Moore of Colorado Springs, CO, placed 11th with 33-01.00.
For the women, Becker once again broke the shot put record with her first place throw of 45-04.50. Other women who competed in the shot put and set personal bests included: freshman Amber Dunham of Independence, KS (2nd—39-02.5); freshman Michelle Baltimore of Yuma, AZ (3rd—38-00.00); freshman Gilda Alvarez of Yuma, AZ (6th—34-08.00); and sophomore Sarah Helm of Seneca, KS (7th—34-01.50). Meanwhile, freshman Trina Scholl of Colorado Springs, CO, just missed setting a personal best (5th—37-00.50).
In the women’s weight throw, junior Anna Miller of Blue Rapids, KS, finished 1st with 44-09.50. Competing in the event and setting personal bests were Baltimore (2nd—42-08.00) and Scholl (5th—35-10.50).
In addition, freshman Heather Simmons of Howard, KS, cleared 7-6, won the event, and set a new indoor record in her first pole vault competition of the season.
Seeing their first action in the women’s high jump were Helm who won the event clearing 4-6 and freshman Shawntay Hackworth of Ft. Worth, TX, who placed 2nd with 4-2.
All events that were to be held outside during the meet were cancelled because of the weather.
