The Bethany College men's basketball team suffered a 64-82 loss last Thursday to the 6th-ranked team in the NAIA, McPherson College, before defeating Kansas Wesleyan University 67-98 Saturday night in Hahn Gym.
Bethany Head Men's Basketball Coach, Clair Oleen, said that although his team played well in the first half versus McPherson, his team's efforts in shooting, rebounds and defense went south from there.
"It was a very disappointing ending to the game," Oleen said.
As a team, the Swedes shot 31.4 percent from the field, 36.4 percent from beyond the arc and 52.2 percent from the line.
Trey Beachum and Quenton Jennings led the team with 12 points apiece. Beachum, who had seven rebounds, was four for 18 from the field, two for four from the three and two for three from the line.
Jennings was five for 15 from the field and two for six from the three.
Chris Dean tallied 11 points for Bethany with seven rebounds. He was four for 10 from the field and three for six from the line.
With 10 points was Ray Purtle. Clayton Goggins offered up nine points for Bethany.
In their win over the Coyotes, Bethany shot 47.4 percent from the field, 40 percent from the three-point range and 63.2 percent from the line.
Beachum and Haydon Parks led the team with 13 points apiece. Beachum, with six rebounds, was five for eight from the field, one for two from the three and two for four from the line.
Parks, who had seven rebounds, was five for nine from the field, two for two from the three and one for three from the line.
Goggins and Dean chalked up 12 points each while Purtle and Justin Clark added nine points apiece.
Danny Dodson, who had eight points for Bethany, had nine rebounds and two assists.
The team now is 5-5 in KCAC play and 7-11 overall.
Bethany's junior varsity men's team remains undefeated in conference play with two more wins this past week.
The varsity team is in a three-way tie for fifth place, alongside Tabor College and Ottawa University. Holding tight to first place is McPherson College with a 9-1 record. Southwestern College is 8-2, University of Saint Mary is 7-3 and Sterling College is 6-4. Friends University is 4-6 and Bethel College is 1-9. The Coyotes remain winless in conference play.
Bethany is back in action at Ottawa University on Jan. 26. The team hosts Friends University at 7 p.m. Jan. 28.
