Haydon Parks has been selected for the 2012 Capital One District 6 College Division First-Team Academic All-District® Team. The team is selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) to recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom.
Parks is a senior forward from Osage City, Kan. He has been a two-year starter for Bethany College. During that time he has shot 49.7% from the field, 43.8% from three-point range, and 55.8% from the free throw line. Parks averages 6.8 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game. He earned All-KCAC Honorable Mention honors and was named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Honors Court in 2010-2011.
Head Basketball Coach Clair Oleen says, "Haydon is a fine young man, a good student, and is going to become a fine teacher in health and physical education and will be a fine coach who will positively impact the lives of others. He has been a fine player for us here at Bethany the past two years."
Parks is on the honor roll and Dean's List and meets the criteria for NAIA All-American Scholar Athlete. He serves Bethany as a Resident Assistant and participates in many community activities with the basketball team and with the health and physical education teaching majors. Parks is an active participant in the basketball Pen Pal Program, helps in fitness events at area elementary schools, and participated in the Battle of the Buses Pink event.
Assistant Professor of Health and Physical Education Department Melissa Seacat adds, "Haydon is a committed student and is growing into his role as a future educator. I have complete confidence that he is going to do an amazing job teaching, leading and influencing hundreds, if not thousands of today's youth. We are blessed to have him at Bethany College, and we're looking forward to watching his career flourish!"
Parks is the son of Duane and Christine Parks and is majoring in health and physical education teaching.
Student-athletes are nominated by current CoSIDA members at their respective institutions. Criteria for nomination are they must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.3 GPA (on a 4.0 scale) and must have attended their current institution for at least one full academic year and have reached sophomore athletic eligibility status.
First-team Academic All-District® honorees advance to the Capital One Academic All-America® Team ballot, where first, second and third-team All-America honorees will be selected later this month. The Academic All-America ® Team ballot is voted upon by the National Academic All-America® Committee.
