Going into regionals, the Swedes had nothing to lose; they were the #7 seed, going against the #2 seed, College of Saint Mary. The Swedes headed to Bellevue, Neb. on Wednesday night to open up the regionals on Thursday night. The Swedes fought hard against the CSM Flames, but lost the match 2-3.
Along with the Swedes in the regional tournament were the Kansas Wesleyan Coyotes, and the Bethel Threshers from the KCAC. There were five teams from the MCAC to finish out the eight teams in the tournament. They included: Bellevue University, College of Saint Mary, College of the Ozarks, Park University, and Peru State.
After watching the #5 seed Coyotes of Kansas Wesleyan defeat the #4 seed Peru State in four games, the Swedes knew that they had a chance to beat the Flames from the College of Saint Mary. The Swedes came out and dominated in game one against the Flames, and pulled off a win. They then went back and forth between games with the Flames, and found themselves going to a fifth game. They battled it out, but they unfortunately lost 13-15.
Despite the loss, the Swedes put out an impressive fight against the Flames and impressed many of the teams at the tournament. Not many #7 seeds give a #2 seed that much of a run. Although the Swedes finished the season on that loss, they have many things to be happy about. They went 23-10 overall, and improved big time from last year’s 9-16-1. The Swedes also improved to 2nd in conference from last year’s 7th place finish.
The Swedes will unfortunately be losing setter Kelli Noonan to graduation, but they have high hopes of recruiting more athletes.
