Swede athletes who competed in the UNK Pre-Holiday Meet in Kearney, NE, on December 14, 2007, found themselves turning in good performances in their last meet before the Christmas break as one them broke a school record and four others either improved their qualifying marks or hit qualifying marks for NAIA National Indoor Track & Field Championships in Johnson City, TN. Results
Breaking the indoor school record in the pentathlon, freshman Danielle Garman of Lincoln, KS, scored 2919 points. To qualify for the national meet in this event, she needs to have one of the top 16 scores in the nation throughout the season. Garman's best finishes were in the 800m run as she was 1st in a personal record 2:29.79, just missing the school record, and in the high jump as she tied for 3rd with 4-09.75. She also competed in the long jump (a personal record 16-00.25), the 55m hurdles (10.05), and the shot put (a personal record 33-00.50).
Improving her "B" Standard to an "A" Standard in the weight throw, junior Jessica Becker of Capitan, NM, placed 2nd with a personal record 49-11.00. She also won the shot put with 45-08.00.
Meanwhile, junior Sarah Helm of Seneca, KS, hit the "B" Standard in the 55m hurdles as she placed 3rd in 8.68, which equaled her personal record and her indoor school record from last season. She was also part of the 4 x 400m relay team that finished 3rd in 4:26.80. Other members of the team were sophomore Stephanie Wilson of Pomona, KS, junior Leah Clay of Lawrence, KS, and freshman Jaci Kepler of Bassett, KS.
Another top performance was by freshman Morgan Salter of Holcomb, KS, who finished 2nd in the 3000m run with a personal record of 12:26.04.
For the men, seniors Caleb Svaty of Kanopolis, KS, and Nathan Whitcomb of Cottonwood Falls, KS, improved their qualifying marks in the weight throw. Svaty improved his "A" Standard to 53-02.25, placing 3rd, while Whitcomb improved his "B" Standard to an "A" Standard with 53-01.00, placing 5th.
The men's 4 x 400m relay team placed 2nd overall in 3:36.68 after winning the second of three heats. Members on the team were freshman Nick O'Loughlin of Hugoton, KS, junior Hugo Escobar of Emporia, KS, junior James Bowden of Salina, KS, and sophomore Adam Rains of Lakin, KS.
The next meet for the teams is at the Ward Haylett Invitational hosted by Doane College in Crete, NE, on January 12, 2008.
