Of the four athletes who traveled to the Jayhawk Invitational in Lawrence, KS, on January 25, 2008, junior Jessica Becker of Capitan, NM, broke her school record in the shot put once again as all four placed 4th or better.

For Becker, her school record toss of 50-02.50 in the shot put won the event and improved her NAIA "A" mark in the event.  Going into the meet, she was nationally ranked 1st in the NAIA.  Becker did not compete in the indoor weight throw at the meet.

The only other woman to compete at the meet for the Swedes was junior Sarah Helm of Seneca, KS.  Racing in the 60m hurdles against a field that included Kansas University's Ashley Brown, a U.S. Olympic Trials qualifier, Helm placed 4th in 9.56.  Before the weekend, Helm was nationally ranked 7th in the NAIA.

Two men, seniors Nathan Whitcomb of Cottonwood Falls, KS, and Caleb Svaty of Kanopolis, KS, competed in the indoor weight throw at the meet.  Whitcomb, who was nationally ranked 4th in the NAIA, placed 2nd in the meet with 55-02.00, while Svaty, who was nationally ranked 5th in the NAIA, placed 3rd with 54-01.75.

These for athletes will join the rest of the Swedes on February 2 as the college hosts the Kessinger Classic in Stroble-Gibson Gymnasium and Anderson Field.  Indoor events include the shot put, indoor weight, high jump and pole vault; all other events will be held outside if the weather permits.
