Hosting the 3rd Annual Kessinger Classic at Stroble-Gibson Gymnasium on February 2, 2008, junior Jessica Becker of Capitan, NM, broke the school record in the women's shot put for the fifth time this season, while senior Nathan Whitcomb of Cottonwood Falls, KS, broke the school record in the men's indoor weight for the second time this season. In addition, four NAIA "A" Standards were improved, while one was met for the first time this season.
In the women's shot put, Becker improved her school record a quarter of an inch to 50-02.75, which improved her qualifying "A" mark and currently keeps her ranked at 2nd in the nation. Finishing 2nd in the event, senior Anna Miller of Blue Rapids, KS, met the "A" standard for the first time and is currently ranked 11th with her throw of 42-00.00
Becker and Miller also finished in the top two spots in the indoor weight as Becker improved her qualifying "A" mark to 51-01.75, while Miller threw 48-04.50. They are currently ranked 5th and 8th in the nation.
For the men, senior Caleb Svaty of Kanopolis, KS, thought he had the a new school record after he threw 57-09.00 on his final attempt of the morning, but Whitcomb stepped into the ring and met Svaty's challenge by throwing 59-03.00 breaking his record from two weeks ago. The top two finishers in the event improved their qualifying "A" marks and jumped up in the national rankings as Whitcomb is currently 3rd and Svaty is currently 4th.
Because of early afternoon wind chills below 40 degrees, outside events were not held at the meet. The Swedes travel to Colorado Springs, CO, on February 9 to compete at the Don Barrett-Air Force Open.
