Competing against several NCAA Division I & II schools at the Don Barrett-Air Force Open in Colorado Springs, CO, on February 9, 2008, junior Jessica Becker of Capitan, NM, won the women's shot put, senior Nathan Whitcomb of Cottonwood Falls, KS, placed 4th in the men's indoor weight, and senior Anna Miller of Blue Rapids, KS, improved her NAIA "A" qualifying mark in the women's indoor weight.
Even though Becker did not improve her NAIA ranking in the shot put, her throw of 49-07.25 was enough to win the event. Currently, she is still ranked 2nd in the event.
With her improved qualifying mark, Miller's personal best throw of 50-09.25 in the indoor weight earned her 11th and moved her up to 9th in the national rankings. Miller also threw the shot put at the meet.
Other women who competed at the meet were: sophomore Michelle Baltimore of Yuma, AZ (shot put & indoor weight); freshman Danielle Garman of Lincoln, KS (60m hurdles & long jump); sophomore Krystal Fletcher of Topeka, KS (indoor weight); junior Sarah Helm of Seneca, KS (60m hurdles); freshman Jaci Kepler of Bassett, NE (60m dash, 60m hurdles, & 200m dash); sophomore Trina Scholl of Colorado Springs, CO (shot put & indoor weight).
National rankings for the women include: Becker who is 6th in the indoor weight; freshman Danielle Garman of Lincoln, KS, who is 7th in the pentathlon; junior Sarah Helm of Seneca, KS, who is 12th in the 60m hurdles; and Miller who is 13th in the shot put.
In the men's competition, Whitcomb's 4th place throw of 56-09.50 in the indoor weight did not improve his national ranking as he is still 3rd, while senior Caleb Svaty of Kanopolis, KS, is ranked 5th.
Other men who competed at the meet were: junior Hugo Escobar of Emporia, KS (400m dash); freshman Nick O'Loughlin of Hugoton, KS (60m dash, 200m dash, & 400m dash); and Svaty (indoor weight).
On February 15, the Swedes compete at the UNK All-Comers meet in Kearney, NE.
