Swedes take 3 of 4

This week the Swedes won 2 out of 3 against Paul Quinn University before winning their final game against Letourneau University.

The Swedes started the week with a three game series against Paul Quinn College in Dallas, Texas.  They won the first two in the series and ended up dropping the third.  The Swedes offence  started off slow against the Tigers; something rare to Bethany College having led the country in hitting the past two seasons.

“We just came out flat, as poorly as we played we were lucky to come out with two wins” said Coach Dinkel.  Although the offense had struggled, the Swedes pitching staff rose to the challenge; only allowing 12 runs in the three game series against Paul Quinn; six of which were earned.

“We did our job as a staff, when the offense struggles, it is our job to pick them up” said reliever Dustin Vaughan.

Friday the Swedes traveled to Letourneau University, where they won their final game of the road trip in a one nine inning game.  The Swedes fell behind by six in the first inning but came back to rally in fifth inning.  Unlike the previous three games the hitters of Bethany had picked up the pitchers, hitting six home runs and scoring 15, making a final score of 15 - 10.

Head Coach Matt Tramel added, " it took the guys awhile to get use to one another, but once they did you can see what kind of talent we have.  I look for big things out of this years team."

Danny Fernandez and Joel Sundquist led the way with two home runs each, following with one a piece were Ben Bryan and Justin Long.  Eric Lehner led the team on the week going 8 for 12 at the plate.  Lehner said “we’re a young team, and I think we just needed to get acclimated with one another’s baseball styles.”

This week the Swedes will be looking to click on both offense and defense against Mid America University on Tuesday, 19th and against Concordia University on Wednesday the 20th.
