At the Alex Francis Classic hosted by Fort Hays State University in Hays, KS, on March 28-29, 2008, the Swedes won the men's 4 x 400m relay and the women's shot put.  As was the case last year, all distance events, which included everything from the 800m run to the 5000m run, were held on Friday evening in the Rock-N-Roll Distance Classic.
 
In the final event on Saturday, the men's 4 x 400m relay team posted its second fastest time of the outdoor season and won the event with 3:33.21.  Members of the relay team included freshman Nick O'Loughlin of Hugoton, KS, junior James Bowden of Salina, KS, junior Hugo Escobar of Emporia, KS, and freshman Jesse Muntz of Dexter, KS.  Muntz also tied for 3rd in the high jump with 5-08.75.
 
Other notable performances for the men were:  O'Loughlin in the 400m dash (51.65) and the 800m run (a personal best 2:04.31); Escobar in the 400m dash (52.36) and the 800m (a personal best 2:04.53); and Bowden in the 400m dash (52.84).
 
For the women, junior Jessica Becker of Capitan, NM, was the other event winner in the shot put with 48-08.75.  She also placed 4th in the discus with 135-04.00.
 
Two runner-up finishes were in the hammer and the 4 x 400m relay.  Senior Anna Miller threw 142-08.00 in the hammer, while the 4 x 400m relay team of freshman Danielle Garman of Lincoln, KS, junior Sarah Helm of Seneca, KS, sophomore Stephanie Wilson of Pomona, KS, and junior RaChelle Gaylord of Easton, MO, finished in a season best 4:17.25.
 
Helm also finished 3rd in the triple jump with 32-08.50 and was the first leg of the women's 4 x 100m relay that finished 4th in 52.12.  Joining Helm on the team were Garman, freshman Jaci Kepler of Bassett, NE, and Gaylord.
 
Other notable performances for the women were:  Gaylord in the 800m run (a personal best 2:31.55); Miller in the discus (a season best 134-07.00); freshman Morgan Salter of Holcomb, KS, in the 5000m run (a personal best 19:51.38); and senior Hope Stieben of Otis, KS, in the javelin ( a season best 125-07.00).
 
On April 2-5, Becker (shot put), Garman (400m hurdles), and Helm (100m hurdles) will compete in Austin, TX, at the Texas Relays, while the rest of the Swedes compete at the Hutch Night Relays in Hutchinson, KS, on April 5.
