The Swedes traveled to Bethel College in North Newton, KS, to compete in the ACCK Championships on April 12, 2008. Overall, the women placed 2nd with 111 points, while the men placed 5th with 59.
Leading the way for the women, junior Jessica Becker of Capitan, NM, was a double event winner in the shot put with 46-11.00 and in the discus with 123-04.00. Joining her as the women's only other event winner was senior Hope Stieben of Otis, KS, in the javelin with 126-09.00.
Top three individual finishes for the women included: sophomore Michelle Baltimore of Yuma, AZ, who was 2nd in the discus with 122-00.00 and 3rd in the hammer with 140-02.50; senior Leah Clay of Lawrence, KS, who 3rd in the 400m hurdles with a 1:15.69; sophomore Amber Dunham of Independence, KS, who was 2nd in the javelin with a season best 123-06.00 and 3rd in the shot put with a season best 41-00.00; freshman Jaci Kepler of Bassett, NE, who was 3rd in the 100m hurdles with 17.38; senior Anna Miller of Blue Rapids, KS, who was 2nd in the hammer with 142-09.50 and 3rd in the discus with 118-05.00; and freshman Morgan Salter of Holcomb, KS, who was 3rd in the 5000m run with 20:53.46.
The women's 4 x400m relay team of sophomore Stephanie Wilson of Pomona, KS, Clay, Kepler, and junior RaChelle Gaylord of Easton, MO, also finished 3rd in 4:28.90.
Meanwhile, two men won events for the Swedes. Freshman Ira Autrey of Houston, TX, won the triple jump with 44-09.25, while junior Nhial Malia of Highlands, TX won the 5000m run with 16:56.71.
Top three individual finishes for the men included: Autrey, who was 2nd in the long jump with 20-09.50, and freshman Jesse Muntz of Dexter, KS, who tied for 3rd in the high jump with 6-0.
The men also had two relay teams finish in the top three. In the 4 x 800m relay, junior Hugo Escobar of Emporia, KS, freshman Nick O'Loughlin of Hugoton, KS, junior James Bowden of Salina, KS, and Malia finished 2nd with a season best 8:43.21. In the 4 x 400m relay, O'Loughlin, Bowden, Escobar, and Muntz finished 3rd with a season best 3:31.40.
Members of both teams will compete at the Kansas Relays in Lawrence, KS, on April 16-19.
