Bethany women defeated Bethel 5-4 in a tough match while Bethany men defeated Friends and Bethel 6-3 to capture KCAC Conference Titles.
The Bethany women fought hard and came through winners as Shanda Kilian and Michelle Hinman gained the clinching points minutes apart with hard fought wins.
Stacie Schoon (Winfield, KS Freshman) and Victoria Guedez (Venezuela, Freshman) went 2-0 against Bethel to lead the Swede women.
Coach Bateman said, "It was the closest and most exciting women's match I have been a part of in coaching. Down 4-3 we needed close third set victories from Shanda and Michelle to pull out the comeback win. Shanda Kilian won 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(8-6) to capture the KCAC title. Congratulations to Bethel on a well-played match, in which only a couple points separated the teams. They are a very strong team we will see again this year in the post season, and we will need to play at our best to compete with."
The Bethany men took care of business in the morning with a 6-3 win over Friends, followed by a 6-3 win over Bethel. Brad Bietau lead the men going 4-0 on the day with solid play and great leadership.
Victories in singles by Skyler Verloop, Adam Hambleton, Rogerio Yamamoto, and Brad Bietau against Friends, with the doubles teams of Jon Feyerherm/Jose Garcia and Bietau/Mitch DeJong winning their doubles matches led the Swedes to victory. Derek Watson and Adam Hambleton teamed up against Bethel to pull off a crucial doubles win.
"Friends is a much improved, well-coached, hard working team and gave us all we could handle today. We were fortunate to lead after doubles and kept the momentum for singles. Jon "Big Shot" Feyerherm and Jose Garcia played a crucial role with a tight doubles win at #2," said Bateman.
