For the women who did not qualify to compete at the Nebraska Open in Lincoln, NE, they had the opportunity to travel to North Newton, KS, to compete at the Bethel College Invitational on April 26, 2008, where three throwers finished in the top three in their respective events.
Leading the way at Bethel with runner-up finishes were sophomores Gilda Alvarez of Yuma, AZ, and Kyrstal Fletcher of Topeka, KS. Alvarez was 2nd in the discus with a personal best 122-11.00, while Fletcher was 2nd in the javelin with a personal best 111-06.00.
Finishing 3rd in the shot put, junior Shalice Tommerup of Plentywood, MT, threw a personal best 38-03.00. Alvarez finished 4th in the event with a 38-01.50.
Other women competing at the meet were freshman Josie Schamp of Arvada, CO, who competed in discus, and sophomore Trina Scholl of Colorado Springs, CO, who competed in the hammer and the shot put. Fletcher also threw the hammer at the meet.
The women will join the rest of the team at the KCAC Track & Field Championships at Friends University in Wichita, KS, on May 2-3.
