OTTAWA, Kan. – The Swedes golf team was in action earlier this week opening up their 2016-17 season in the Ottawa University Invitational at Eagle Bend Golf Course in Lawrence. The men's team finished fourth in the tournament while the women landed in the sixth spot.

The women were highlighted by junior Aspen Bryant who was in the individual tournament champion. Bryant shot a 147 (+3) hitting a 72 and 75 during her two rounds. She ended up and five strokes ahead of the next competitor.

Freshman Emily Sutton tied for the 10 spot with seven other golfers shooting a 164 (+20) after an 84 and 80 during her two rounds.

"On the women's side I was very pleased with Aspen Bryant and her leadership on the course taking home medalist honors," Head Coach Dalton Stevens stated. "Emily Sutton played the two role for us and for her first tournament as a freshman to shoot 84-80 is great for us going forward. We will look to keep improving the tail end of our lineup which will help us be very competitive in the conference."

Junior Josh Meeks led the Swedes men's campaign. He shot a 149 (+5) after posting a 75 and a 74. This performance was worthy of a tie for fifth place. Meeks finished behind just two KCAC competitors.

As a team, the Swedes only finished behind one KCAC school.

"There are definitely some positives that we can take out of our season opener at Ottawa," Coach Stevens said. "It was nice to see Josh Meeks play at a high level and finish in the top 5 individually. We also had some nice second rounds out of Jordan DellaGiustina, and Oliver Rubenstein. Having Scott Farrall forced to withdraw due to knee problems really put us behind the 8 ball in the second round and kept us from really putting a solid number together. Meliton Moreno and Juan Pablo Sin competed as individuals and posted solid rounds in the second round that we could've really used."
