The Bethany College football team kicked off their season with a home opener against McPherson College on Saturday night of Bethany College's Family and Alumni Sports Weekend. Unfortunately, the Swedes fell 37-21 to the Bulldogs.

McPherson took an early 2-0 lead after a safety off of a bad snap to the Bethany kicker freshman Octavio Torres. However, the Swedes answered back with a touchdown run by senior Sean Dahley after a 36 yard pass from sophomore quarterback Mark Margres to senior wide receiver Willie Edwards set up. Bethany added to their lead with 13:20 left in the second quarter on a 31 yard touchdown pass from Margres to freshman Troy Williams, putting the Swedes up 14-2.  McPherson kept battling and closed in on the Swedes after a touchdown pass from Shane Mascarenas to Stephen Harrison. Bethany quickly answered back with a touchdown pass to Edwards from freshman Zachary Waggoner, increasing their lead to 21-9.  The Bulldogs of McPherson again answered the Swedes with a touchdown on a quarterback keeper by Josh White. McPherson then attempted a field goal on their next possession, but missed.  However, Josh White added another touchdown on a keeper play, giving McPherson a 23-21 lead. The Bulldogs never looked back from there. Bethany missed a field goal with 14:28 in the third quarter, but got another chance after a McPherson fumble with 10:45 left. However, on 4th and 2, the Swedes could not convert. The Bulldogs got the back and scored on another touchdown pass from Mascarenas to Harrison. Mascarenas and Harrison scored for a third time on the night with 1:28 left in the game after a Bethany turnover on downs, giving McPherson the 37-21 victory.

Bethany will continue their 2008 season by traveling to Southwest Baptist on Saturday, September 20th. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m.
