The Bethany College men's soccer team nabbed three big wins this past week. They battled Oklahoma Wesleyan University on Tuesday and held on to get a big overtime win before traveling to Texas this past weekend.
In addition, James Fox, freshman forward from Wichita Falls, Texas, was named KCAC Offensive Player of the Week for week one. Fox had two goals and one assist against Oklahoma Wesleyan and two goals against Dallas Christian College. Freshman TJ Rodriguez was named the All-Classic MVP and was named to the All-Classic Team along with junior Hector De La Cruz and freshman Cody Crosby.
Bethany started the week with a home game against Oklahoma Wesleyan. After trailing 0-2 at halftime, the Swedes made a comeback and tied the game at two, sending the game into overtime. Bethany ended up with a 3-2 overtime win. "It was a great come from behind win that gave us some much needed confidence as we move forward in our season," said head coach Jeff Kidd. Fox had two goals and one assist while Rodriguez had the game winning goal along with one assist. Junior Matt Nipe assisted on the game winner on "a great run from the back" described Kidd. "Junior Logan Adams also played a trmendous game in the net." Adams had nine saves that included two game saving stops at the end of regulation to help propel the team into overtime.
The Swedes traveled to Texas and battled Southwestern Assemblies of God University on Friday. They never seemed to find a rhythm Kidd explained, but they still found a way to get the jnob done. Bethany battled the entire game and came out with a 2-0 victory. Sophomore Nick Butler scored the first goal off of an assist by De La Cruz. Freshman Kipp Keffel scored the second goal, which was assisted by Rodriguez. The defense played an important role as they played solid throughout the entire game. The Swedes only allowed two shots on game as Adams and freshman Scott James split time in the goal for the shutout.
The squad then took on Dallas Christian on Saturday. Bethany struggled to get things together and going in the first half, "but came out firing on all pistons in the second half," stated Kidd. The Swedes jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead, but then allowed Dallas Christian to score twice. However, Bethany prevailed and added one more goal to give them a 5-2 win. De La Cruz had two goals and three assists, senior James Pacheco added one goal and one assist, Fox had two goals, and Rodriguez had one assist.
The Swedes are now 3-2 on the year. They continue their season this week with a home scrimmage against Kansas Wesleyan on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
