The Swede football team battled Tabor College last Saturday during Bethany's Homecoming weekend. After a tough 0-4 start, Bethany grabbed their first win, beating the Blue Jays 21-14.
Bethany came out with their offense firing and got on the board quickly. With 6:05 left in the first, sophomore quarterback Mark Margres found the end zone on a two-yard touchdown run. Freshman kicker Octavio Torres added the PAT, putting Bethany up 7-0. Less than four minutes later, the Swedes added to their lead as senior running back Sean Dahley blasted through the goal line on a three-yard touchdown run. After the PAT by Torres, the Swedes had a solid 14-0 lead. With less than seven minutes left in the second quarter, Margres again scored on a 13-yard touchdown run. Bethany entered half time with a 21-0 lead after Torres added the PAT.
Tabor got on the board with 10:08 in the third quarter, and would again score early in the fourth quarter, tightening the Swedes' lead to 21-14. The Bethany defense would hold strong, making some key defensive stops as Bethany held on to nab the 21-14 victory. Dahley led the Bethany offense with 173 rushing yards as senior wide receiver Willie Edwards also contributed with two catches for a total of 42 yards.
Bethany will return to action this coming Saturday, October 18th, as they travel to Ottawa University. Kick off is set for 7 p.m. The Swedes are now 1-4 overall, and 1-3 in the KCAC.
