Eighteen Swede track and field athletes traveled to Doane College for the Ward Haylett indoor meet on Saturday, and Nhial Malia took home Jan. 10the gold medal in the 3000.
Malia broke loose from the pack with about four laps to go and won running away. His time was 9:12.35. Other top placers included Ira Autrey in the triple jump - he was second in 13.59m (44' 7") and Autrey also placed fifth in the long jump (6.37m / 21' 6 3/4") and fifth in the 55m in 6.72.
Josh Snider placed in the top six in two events by taking fifth in the mile run (4:51.0) and sixth in the 800m in 2:10.69. Snider anchored the men's 4 x 400 relay that took fourth - others on that relay were Kenneth Whitacre, Ty Bieker, and Jesse Muntz. The 4x4 ran a 3:42.18.
Courtney Gallardo led the women's effort by placing in the top six in all her events. Gallardo was fourth in the long jump (4.77m / 15' 7 3/4"), fourth in the 400 (1:05.78), fifth in the 200 (28.74) and led off the women's 4 x 400 relays that placed fifth (Gallardo, Stephanie Wilson, Shane Valdez, Jaci Kepler) in 4:36.43.
Valdez was fourth in the 55m hurdles (9.38), took fifth in the long jump with a 4.75m / 15' 7" jump, and placed sixth in the triple jump with a 9.84m (32' 3 1/2") effort.
Wilson led most of the way in the women's 800 before settling for fifth in 2:35.49 in her first meet of the indoor season. Elizabeth Nwabeuze placed fifth in the 55m with a 7.77 qualifying mark and a 7.80 in the finals.
Many athletes - despite the first meet of 2009 coming just five days after returning from the long holiday break - seemed to be near or bettering their earlier marks from December.
"I thought we competed hard," head coach Aaron Davis said. "Many of the marks were a pleasant surprise."
