Six first place finishes and a national qualifying mark highlighted the Swedes' efforts at the McPherson Invitational on Saturday, March 14.
Topping the field in the shot put, freshman Mollie Dahl also hit a national meet qualifying mark as she threw a 12.80m (42' 0") winner. Dahl also qualified for the indoor nationals this winter.
Shane Valdez, freshman, won the long jump with a 4.85m (15' 11") effort. On the men's side, senior Nhial Malia won the 5000m run in 16:09.30, sophomore Ira Autrey was first in the triple jump with a 13.78m (45' 2 1/2") mark, sophomore Nick O'Loughlin raced to a 50.55 winner in the 400, and the men's 4 x 400m relay won an exciting finale to the meet by nudging Bethel at the finish line.
The Swedes foursome of O'Loughlin, Hugo Escobar, James Bowden, and Ty Bieker clocked in at 3:26.73 with Bethel right behind at 3:26.76.
Other notable efforts on the men's side included the following: a second 4x4 relay that took fifth with Kenneth Whitacre, Jesse Muntz, Jorge Escobar and Josh Snider finishing in 3:35.28; Muntz took second in the high jump in a personal best 1.93m (6' 4"); Bowden was second in the 200 in 23.89, and Hugo Escobar and Snider finished 3-4 in the 800 in 2:01.22 and 2:01.70. Autrey had a 11.29 personal best in finishing second in the 100m prelims but did not compete in the finals.
In taking second overall as a team, the women got big days from the following: freshman Molly McElgunn (2nd in the 100m in 13.59, 3rd in the 200 in 27.67 and running third on the third place 4x400 relay); freshman Courtney Gallardo with a 2nd in the 200 (27.65), 2nd in the 400 (1:02.17), opening the 4x4, and 3rd in the long jump (4.72m 15' 6"); junior Stephanie Wilson with 3rds in both the 800 (2:31.26) and 1500 (5:37.48) as well as the second leg of the 4x4; junior Gilda Alvarez with a 2nd in the discus (38.60m or 126' 8") and a fourth in the shot put (11.17m or 36' 7 3/4"); freshman Catherine Spicer took 4th in the discus with a 9.43m (116' 0") toss; sophomore Jaci Kepler took 5ths in both the high hurdles (17.99) and 400 (1:06.75); and Valdez also was 2nd in the high hurdles (16.56), 3rd in the triple jump (10.23m or 33' 6 3/4"), and 4th in pole vault (2.28m / 7' 5 3/4").
