Winning two of her three events on the day and hitting national qualifying marks in the two wins, senior Jessica Becker led the women's track and field team to a third place finish at the postponed Alex Francis Classic in Hays on Sunday, March 29.
Already having qualified for the outdoor nationals in the shot put, Becker won that event with another qualifying mark of 14.69m (48' 2 1/2"). She added the discus to her national events in winning with a 44.81m (147' 0"). In the hammer, the Swede senior was fourth in a personal best 43.35m (142' 3").
With the Swedes still on Spring Break, neither team had its full roster of competitors at the annual Fort Hays meet that was supposed to be contested on Friday and Saturday. With the weather situation making things dicey, FHSU officials cancelled the high school division on Saturday and went with a college-only meet on Sunday.
Molly McElgunn and Courtney Gallardo, both freshmen, continued to improve in the sprints with McElgunn taking fourth in the 100 in a season's best 12.84 while Gallardo and McElgunn battled to the finish with Gallardo nudging McElgunn at the finish. They were clocked in 27.05 and 27.06 respectively, both season's best marks.
On the men's side, only four Swedes were able to make the trip but Nick O'Laughlin took third in both the 200m (22.70) and 400m (51.37) while freshman Ty Bieker raced to a third place finish in the 400m hurdles in a 59.36.
