A tough wind and dropping temperatures weren't the only elements the Swedes track team battled at the Hutchinson Night Relays on Saturday, April 4.

Some of the event competition was nothing short of outstanding but the women finished fifth as a team and the men seventh. Eleven women's teams and 12 men's teams were at the meet.

"The conditions were such that it wasn't a day to be pointing for great marks," assistant coach Jay Myers said, "but it was a day to compete hard and see what happens. We did compete hard at this meet."

Mollie Dahl was the only Swede event winner as she threw a 12.62m (41' 5") national qualfying mark in the shot put to win the event by almost a foot and a half.

Ira Autrey did not win an event - he was sixth in the long jump and fifth in the triple jump - but his 7.12m (23' 4 1/2") leap in the long jump was a national outdoor qualifying mark. Three competitors went over 24 feet in the long jump and three more went over the 23 foot mark.

Top three finishes for BC included the following: Jordan Gray took third in the men's shot put with a 14.55m (47' 9") throw; the men's 4 x 800 relay (Nick O'Laughlin, Nhial Malia, Josh Snider, Hugo Escobar) were clocked in an 8:33.00 time for second place; Courtney Gallardo's 1:03.79 in the women's 400m dash was good for third; and Shane Valdez took a pair of thirds with a 16.55 in the women's high hurdles and a personal best 5.13m (16' 10 1/4") in the long jump.
