In his first decathlon outing of the 2009 outdoor season, junior Jesse Muntz took third at the Emporia State University multi-event competition April 9-10.
Muntz had personal bests in the 110 high hurdles (15.92) and in the pole vault (3.55m - 11' 7 3/4") and solid efforts in the high jump (1.90m - 6' 2 3/4") and the 1500m (4:54.30). Overall Muntz was consistently in the top 5 competitors in most of the 10 events, but an elbow injury kept his throwing marks from being better.

The decathlon is a two-day competition with five events (100m, long jump, shot put, high jump, 400m) the first day and five more (110m high hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin, 1500m run) the second day. Competitors at Emporia came from the NAIA, NCAA and community colleges. Muntz had the top placing among the NAIA entrants.
