The Bethany College baseball team continued their conference schedule this past week. The squad hosted Kansas Wesleyan University on Wednesday before Ottawa headed to Anderson Field on Friday.
Despite taking an early 1-0 lead, the Coyotes answered back and went on to take a 4-1 victory from Bethany. Seniors Hop Sullivan, Craig Barnes, and Andrew Vancil and juniors Jimmy Smith, Aaron Larsen, Darrin Biegert, and Daryl Schlepp all had one hit each. Larsen had the lone RBI in the game. Junior Brian Guyett got the start for the Swedes as junior Brian Wojtkiewicz came in as relief. Guyett faced 24 batters, striking out three and giving up eight hits. Wojtkiewicz gave up only two hits in his relief appearance.
After the Swedes took an early lead in game two, Kansas Wesleyan scored in each of the last four innings to defeat Bethany 12-7. Juniors Wes Walker and Kofi Osei-Aning both had two hits each. Sullivan, Vancil, Biegert, Schlepp, and juniors Braden Friesz and Jeremy Craig each tacked on one hit. Vancil and Walker each had two RBIs while Vancil had one. Junior Ryan Mashinter got the start as senior Cameron Rittinger came in as relief.
In game one with Ottawa, the two squads were tied at one in the fourth before the Braves tacked on two more runs to give them a 3-1 victory. Sullivan, Vancil, Biegert, and Barnes had the four hits for the Swedes. Biegert had the sole RBI in the event. Sophomore T.D. Huett got the start, facing 25 batters and striking out three while giving up five hits.
The Swedes looked to get back on track in game two, and were able to do just that. Scoring in four of their six innings at the plate, Bethany grabbed a 6-3 "W." Osei-Aning led the offense with two hits, followed by Sullivan, Friesz, Walker, and Biegert, all who had one hit apiece. Osei-Aning had two RBIs as Biegert, Barnes, and Friesz tacked on one each. Sophomore Kevin Krattenmaker got the start, facing 27 batters, striking out three and giving up seven hits.
The Swedes ended the week by hosting Northwestern Oklahoma State University on Sunday. In another battle of the bats, NOSU edged Bethany 22-14.
Bethany heads to Ottawa on Tuesday, April 21st to finish the series after the games were rained out on Saturday. The Swedes then host a doubleheader against Friends University on Thursday before heading to Wichita to complete the series on Saturday, April 25th. The squad is now 5-13 in the KCAC and 16-25 overall.
