The Bethany College softball team completed their KCAC regular season schedule this past week with a 15-game win streak. The Swedes took second place in the KCAC with a 13-3 record. Bethany heads to Ottawa University on Thursday and Friday, April 30th and May 1st for the conference tournament. The squad will first battle Southwestern College on Thursday at 10:00 am. The Swedes are 30-13 overall.
The Swedes hosted Kansas Wesleyan University on Monday for senior night before heading to Sterling College on Tuesday to close out their schedule.
The Swedes came out firing against rival Kansas Wesleyan in game one, scoring in the first two innings. The Coyotes edged closer to the Swedes before the Bethany bats found their stroke, scoring five runs in the fifth inning and taking a 7-1 victory. Seniors Sarah Logan and Laura Christopher and junior Morgan Evans led the Swedes with two hits apiece. Seniors Breanna Boling and Angelisa Sexson and juniors Jacquelyn Hernandez and Emily Zimmerman all added one hit. J. Hernandez, Logan, Zimmerman, and freshman Stephanie Tyler all tacked on one RBI. Tyler got the start and win for Bethany, facing 27 batters, giving up only seven hits and striking out eight.
The Bethany bats kept their flow in game two, scoring in four out of a five inning run rule, ending the day with a 10-2 "W." J. Hernandez, Zimmerman, and Boling all had two hits while Christopher, Logan, senior Emily Heronemus, and freshman Kellyn Peters each added one. J. Hernandez tallied three RBIs as Peters had two and Evans, Boling, and Sexson added one apiece. Senior Savannah Dejmal got the start and win, facing 18 batters, giving up only three hits and striking out six.
Tuesday's matchup with the Warriors of Sterling proved to be a battle. After Sterling jumped out to a 7-1 lead, the Swedes mustered up three runs in the seventh inning to tie the game. Bethany would hold Sterling in the seventh and eighth innings, and both teams would score one in the ninth. In the tenth inning, the Swedes lit up the Warriors for three runs. Sterling would score two more, but never regain a lead as Bethany won 11-10. Tyler led the Swedes with two home runs, one hit, and six RBIs. The freshman started the game, then reentered for the save as junior Rebecka Parker came in as relief and picked up the win. Christopher added three hits, and the "Emilys" Heronemus and Zimmerman each added two hits. Boling and Logan tacked on one each. Christopher, Zimmerman, and Boling all had one RBI.
Game two was another nail biter as Bethany jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead. However, Sterling would claw their way back into the game, scoring in the fourth and fifth, and then tying the game in the seventh. The Swedes poured out four runs in the top of the eighth, and held Sterling to only two runs later that inning to come out with a 13-11 win. Logan and Tyler chalked up three hits apiece while Evans, Christopher, and Zimmerman all had two. Heronemus and Sexson each contributed one. Zimmerman's three RBIs were in addition to Evans' and Logan's two each. Christopher, Tyler, Boling, and Sexson all had one. Logan, Zimmerman, and Christopher homered in the contest. Dejaml got the start as Tyler came in as relief and picked up the save.
