Simms recently completed a master's degree in education at Marietta College (Ohio). There she also served as assistant track and field coach. She coached the men and women throwers and was strength and conditioning coach for the team's throwers, jumpers, sprinters and distance runners.

At Bethany, Simms earned a bachelor's degree in physical education. As a track and field athlete at Bethany, Simms was named most inspirational athlete, was a four-time All-Conference KCAC Champion, and team captain for four years.  She was also an NAIA National Outdoor and Indoor Qualifier in the hammer and weight throw, respectively.  Simms had the record at Bethany in the hammer and weight throw in 2003, 2004, and 2006.
