Giving back to the community and surrounding areas has been a long-standing tradition at Bethany College and within the athletic department at the college.
Numerous athletes involved in Bethany's football program had the opportunity this past year to donate their time to varied service projects.
According to head football coach, Jamie Cruce, the team was involved in cleanup efforts throughout the
Lindsborg community and at Coronado Heights. These projects were coordinated through the Lindsborg Kiwanis Club.
As the team's main project, the team traveled to Salina and spent time with grade school children as well as special needs classes. Bethany athletes taught basics of the game of football to and played football with the students. They also simply spent time with the students, talking and reading together.
"I am very proud of the young men who donated their time toward these opportunities to better themselves through service toward others," said Cruce.
Michael Broome, who will be a junior this fall, said he felt rewarded each time he would walk into the classroom and see the kids' smile.
"It's like we were superstars in their eyes," Broome said. "Many of those kids just see football on TV, but they can't play because of their handicap. Playing with them the game that I love so much really had an impact on me."
