The Bethany College men and women's cross country teams put on their running shoes and hit the ground this past weekend. The Swedes opened their season as they competed in the Baker Maple Leaf Classic. The race took place at Baldwin City Golf Course and included solid footing and gentle rolling hills. The women raced 4,000m while the men raced 5,000m.
The Swedes ran tired, as head coach Aaron Davis has worked them hard the last two weeks. "They all said they felt flat, not fresh, which is what I wanted," he said. "This is conditioning for these runners. They will race tired the whole year."
Despite running with fatigue, freshman Janeeka Montgomery finished ninth on the day.
"We are focusing on late October and November," Davis said. "This was just another workout."
The team next competes at the Friends Invitational on Friday, September 11.
