The Bethany College took the field this past Saturday, but against a familiar opponent: themselves. The Swedes held an early morning scrimmage to help in their continual preparation for their upcoming home and season opener.
"We played some athletes who have had some nagging injuries and hadn't seen the field in a few days," said head coach Jamie Cruce. "We are trying to get back to being healthy."
The Swedes played offense versus defense in four 15-minute quarters. The scrimmage excluded punts and kickoffs.
"The offense did some good things at times," Cruce said. "This week, we will focus on no breakdowns in protection, and on the coverage and formations that gave us problems."
Bethany will open 2009 with a 7 p.m. game against the University of St. Mary on Saturday, September 12 during Bethany's Alumni Sports Weekend.
"We are going to try to eliminate as many mistakes as we can," said Cruce. "When you are even in talent, it comes down to mistakes."
