Fresh off their intense start-of-the-year workouts and practices, it was finally time for the Bethany College women's soccer team to tie up their cleats and head to the field. The squad traveled to Illinois for the Greenville College Invitational Classic.
"This was the first time we had played," said head coach Steve Moore. "It was an eye opening experience with four, five, or six freshman all playing college ball for the first time."
In their season opener on Friday, the Swedes had a rough outing as they fell 4-0 to Principia College. "We haven't had any scrimmages, so we had to get the bugs out," Moore said. "It gave us a feel as to what we are doing."
Hoping for a different outcome on Saturday, Bethany was unable to make that a reality. The squad lost another 4-0 game to host Greenville College. However, Moore remained hopeful on the weekend's outing.
"The results didn't show it, but we played better in the second game," he said. "Throughout practice and games, we hope to keep getting better and better. We will keep try and keep the improvement trend, and hopefully the results will follow."
Bethany is now 0-2 on the year. The team returns to the field for a scrimmage with Hesston College on September 8 at 5:30 p.m. The Swedes will then fly west to California as they will play Bethany University (Santa Cruz, Cali.) on Friday, September 11 at 2 p.m. and Menlo College (Atherton, Cali.) on Saturday, September 12 at 4 p.m.
