Lindsborg News-Record
With the induction of Edward F. Leonard III as thirteenth president, Bethany College began their renaissance. Over a year later, improvements are still being made around campus, including continual renovations to the athletic facilities.
Currently underway are enhancements to Lindstrom Field in Anderson Stadium. A ten foot wide portion of the stadium seating was removed and replaced with metal tread-plate stairs. These stairs provide easier access to seats, concessions, and restrooms. New doors are being installed in addition to concrete work under the bleachers to accommodate the new steps and doorway locations.
Renovations on the restrooms are also ongoing. The previously separate men and women's restrooms are being combined into one large women's restroom. A new larger men's restroom is being installed with all new plumbing, fixtures, and vanities.
In addition, the remodel of the lower stadium area incorporates extensive work on the concessions area.
"We are doing a complete remodel of the interior of the concession building," said Randy Jirak, the campus facilities supervisor at Bethany College. "The interior remodel includes expansion of the concession area featuring all new cabinetry, countertops, and sinks as well as insulation, the replacement of all ceilings, and refinishing of all walls."
The renovations to the outdoor athletic complex and its surroundings are scheduled to be completed by September, and have been long awaited.
"Certainly these new additions are of great value to us and one more project to check off of our list of needs," said Bethany College athletic director Jon Daniels.
Earlier this year, an exterior remodel of the press box, concession building, and ticket booths was constructed. This included a new paint scheme and updated logos along with a new sloped metal roof on the concession building.
Also on the overall summer renovations list are more improvements to Hahn Gymnasium. The developments introduce new basket supports, backboards, and rims as well as new shot and game clocks and a suspended volleyball net. In 2008, the floor in Hahn Gymnasium was refinished and painted while new modern bleachers were installed.
The past year has brought many other improvements for the Bethany athletic facilities. Just weeks ago, a new Daktronics combination scoreboard was installed at Lindstrom Field in Anderson Stadium. The scoreboard will be used for football, men and women's soccer, and outdoor track and field competitions. It features wireless time clocks that track both twenty-five and forty second intervals. Former Bethany football coach Dr. Ted Kessinger and the Bethany Athletic Association coordinated the project. The scoreboard is a donation from Swede supporters, including former players, coaches, staff, family members, and local residents.
One of the several highly anticipated improvements for the Bethany College campus was the addition to the Stroble Gibson Physical Education Center. The new building, connected to the center, features a new weight room complete with donated equipment. The old weight room houses cardio machines while the latest facility has free weights and weight machines. The addition also contains six new coaching offices, a conference room, and locker rooms.
The weight room facility was part of a six million dollar bonding project passed by the college in 2008. Other aspects of the project include the new apartment-style residence hall and the addition of laboratories to Nelson Science Center. The residence hall opened last fall while the laboratories are set to be complete by the fall semester.
In 2008, Anderson Stadium underwent a 1.2 million dollar renovation thanks in part to alumni, friends, and Smoky Valley USD 400. The improvements introduced a new multi-purpose turf field and a widened track, allowing men and women's soccer to play on the field in addition to football. The venue was dedicated as Lindstrom Field in Anderson Stadium on September 5, 2008.
New sod was added to the baseball field this past year, as well as a repaired roof this summer due to a fire last spring.
Bethany College also endured extensive efforts to renew their image as they introduced a new mascot at the beginning of the 2008-2009 academic year. The mascot can be seen on the gymnasium floor, at the center of the turf field, outside the athletic building, and many other places around campus.
All such renovations have been important steps for Bethany College and their revival, and the improvements are certainly far from over.
As Daniels said, "There is still much to do to be where we need to, but we are very thankful for what we have acomplished with help from our administration, the town of Lindsborg, and the Lindsborg school system."
