Hoping to put a tally in their win column, the Swedes headed west, taking on the long drive to California for a two-day playing excursion. On Friday, Bethany went head-to-head with Bethany University in Santa Cruz. The squad was able to chalk up their first win of the season as they beat their fellow-named institution 4-2.

"That was easily the best we had played all year," said head coach Steve Moore. "We changed the formation, and it just seemed to click."

Freshman Shannon Singleton score unassisted. Sophomore Megan Xavier chalked up three goals with assists from sophomore Liz Rose and freshman Kristen Biggs. Her final score was a free kick from about 30 yards out.

"After the first two games, I was a little worried," said senior Kristin Palmer of Benbrook, Texas, "but once we stepped on the field on Friday I knew it was a different ballgame. We played great together and the flow of the game was just what we wanted."

In day two of their playing trip, the Swedes faced Menlo College in Atherton. However, Bethany was unable to make it two wins in a row. Menlo came out with a seemingly unstoppable offensive attack, taking a 6-0 lead in the first half. They would add two more goals in the second, handing the Swedes a big 8-0 loss.

"The stress and the driving had caught up to us," Moore said. "I think we are a much better team than the scoreboard showed, but we did learn a couple things."

Bethany is now 1-3 on the year. They will head to York College on Tuesday, September 15 for a 5 p.m. start time. The Swedes will then return home to host Central Christian College on Saturday, September 19 at 5 p.m.

"Getting the win felt great," Palmer said, "and we look forward to many more this season."
