Fresh off their first victory of the year at Greenville College, the Bethany College men's soccer team returned to the field, hoping to add another "W" to the win chart. On Tuesday, the Swedes were scheduled to scrimmage Hesston College, but the contest was rained out.
Bethany then turned south in a trip to Texas for the weekend. On Friday, the Swedes faced Texas Lutheran University, who is 5-0 on the season and just beat number eight nationally ranked Oklahoma City University earlier in the week. With heavy rain and a 45-minute lightning delay, the game had a scoreless first half before TWU netted the game-winning goal in the 78th minute.
"The game was well played by both teams, especially considering the weather," said head coach Jeff Kidd. "I was very proud with the effort we put forth. Freshman Johnny Nuthall slipped a shot right by the far post nearly giving us the lead just minutes before Texas Wesleyan capitalized on their opportunity."
Senior goalkeeper Logan Adams had an impressive performance for the Swedes, saving eight of nine shots on goal. The back line also played well according to Kidd. "This was a team effort and one that I hope we can continue to build on throughout the rest of the year. Now that I know what level the team is capable of competing at, I will do my best to keep them there."
The Swedes rounded out the weekend with a match-up against Dallas Christian College on Saturday in yet another rain-filled match. "I believe the whole time we were in Dallas in only stopped raining for a total of 4 hours," Kidd said. However, the Bethany was able to come out and grab a 4-2 win for their second victory of the year.
After an early 1-0 Dallas Christian lead, Nuthall scored in the 33rd minute to tie the game. In the second half, Dallas Christian again found the net as Adams made a save, but a fellow Crusader was able to put it between the posts.
"They maintained that lead even though we took a barrage of shots and hit the post on two headers before sophomore Robert Lopez carried the ball up from his center back position and netted a laser from 35 yards out," Kidd said. "That totally changed the game."
Junior Gildardo Navarro gave Bethany their third goal of the match in what Kidd called "a left footed upper ninety strike." Nuthall netted his second goal of the day late in the game to secure the Swedes' 4-2 win.
"We out shot them 24 to 9, but had a tough time finding the goal until the end," said Kidd. "Dallas Christian came out ready to play and we came out too relaxed. Our effort really didn't change until the 77th minute when Robert hit the game tying shot. I could see our attitude change in that one instant, and we took full advantage of it. I don't feel that we should have put ourselves in the position to be playing down a goal, but it was great to see the team fight back and pull this one off in the end."
Nuthall had two goals and two assists while Navarro added one goal and one assist. Lopez tacked on a goal as senior Emeka Obiagwu and freshman David Eklof of Sweden each had one assist.
Bethany is now 2-2 overall in 2009. They next travel to York College on Tuesday, September 15 at 7 p.m. before hosting Central Christian College at 7 p.m. on Saturday, September 19.
