The Bethany College women's soccer team is back from their lengthy trip to California where they picked up their first win of 2009. The Swedes headed to York College on Tuesday, hoping to chalk up another "W" to their record.

After going into the half down 1-0, the Swedes found the net with later in the second half on an unassisted shot, proving to be the final goal of the match. Bethany tied York 1-1.

"We played well, and we did what we wanted to do with style," said head coach Steve Moore.

Sophomore Megan Xavier had two shots on goal while sophomore Tara Rose had one. Junior goalkeeper Sarah Garlock totaled four saves.

Bethany then returned home for their home opener against Central Christian College on Saturday. Central Christian got on the board early, taking a 1-0 lead going into halftime. The Swedes came out and tied the game as freshman Shannon Singleton scored off an assist from Xavier. Scoreless throughout the rest of the half, the game remained that way through the first overtime. Bethany at last broke the tie as Rose netted an assist from freshman Amanda VanLoenen, giving the Swedes a double overtime 2-1 victory.

"We did better finishing and scoring on Saturday versus Tuesday," Moore said. "We outshot both teams this week, but just couldn't score until Saturday rolled around."

Bethany had 11 shots on goal compared to Central Christian's five. Rose had four shots on goal, followed by Xavier and VanLoenen with three each. Garlock again had four saves.

Bethany is now 2-3-1 on the year. They will host Manhattan Christian College on Tuesday, September 22 and Northwestern Oklahoma State University on Thursday, September 24, both at 6 p.m. The Swedes will round out their week with a trip to Oklahoma Wesleyan University on Saturday, September 26 at 2 p.m.
