With a 2-2 start under their belt, the Bethany College men's soccer team continued their season in fine fashion this past week. The squad headed to York College on Tuesday for an evening match-up.
"I was really proud of the effort we gave during the York game," said head coach Jeff Kidd. "We got down early in the match, but kept our composure and got right back into the game."
York came out and took an early lead, scoring in the 23rd minute. However, Bethany answered back six minutes later and got on the board as freshman Johnny Nuthall found the net off an assist from junior Daniel Warner. "Johnny really gave us a huge boost when he put away the game tying goal," Kidd said. "I could really feel the momentum change in our favor at this point."
Despite not capitalizing on a few opportunities, Bethany found their flow in the 68th minute as senior Emeka Obiagwu scored the game winner on an assist through freshman David Eklof and junior Gildardo Navarro. The Swedes went on to win the contest 2-1. Senior goalkeeper Logan Adams chalked up six saves.
"It was really nice to see Emeka work hard for the game winner," said Kidd. "This should be a big confidence booster for E and I look forward to seeing this effort from him all year long."
The Swedes returned home to host Central Christian College Saturday night. "We really came out ready to play in this match."
Bethany took a quick 2-0 lead as, according to Kidd, "Nuthall played extremely well, scoring two goals in the first half that were both brilliantly finished off assists from Navarro and sophomore Kipp Keffel."
Central Christian came out firing in the second half, cutting the lead to 2-1 as they scored in the 47th minute. However, Bethany continued their pressure as they earned a penalty kick off a Central foul in the box. Eklof netted the penalty kick before Nuthall again scored in the 80th minute off a punt from Adams, who also had four saves on the night.
"Our defense and Logan did a great job keeping the ball out of the net tonight," Kidd said. "Although Central Christian had a lot of shots in the second half, I feel the defense did a great job pressuring to make sure that the shots they were getting were tough shots."
Bethany is now 4-2 overall, with a current three-game winning streak. The Swedes will stay in Lindsborg on Tuesday, September 22 to battle Mid America Christian at 4 p.m. before heading to Oklahoma Wesleyan University on Saturday, September 26 for a 6 p.m. showdown.
"Johnny Nuthall worked very hard this week and it really paid off," said Kidd. "He ended up with four goals on the week and deserved every one. All three of his goals Saturday were quality finishes. Johnny is very composed on the ball and really has a nose for the goal. So far this year we have continued to get better in every game and that has been our goal since day one!"
