Fresh off their first win of 2009 in their home opener against the University of St. Mary, the Bethany College football team hit the road. The Swedes traveled to Tabor College on Saturday for an evening kickoff and the first college game at the newly remodeled football stadium in Hillsboro.

The Swedes got off to an early lead as sophomore quarterback Steven Baker hit junior Robert Anderson for a 30-yard touchdown pass. After Tabor fumbled the kickoff, Bethany again tacked on points to the scoreboard as newcomer Alex Fambrough, a baseball player who joined the team Wednesday, kicked a field goal.

Following a Blue Jay field goal early in the second quarter, Bethany extended their lead on a one-yard touchdown run by sophomore Oshane Malcolm, giving the squad a 17-3 lead. The Swede offense did not slow down as Baker again found Anderson for a 20-yard touchdown pass. Tabor quickly answered back with a touchdown, cutting Bethany's lead to 24-10, which would prove to be the score at the half.

The Swedes tacked on a field goal by Fambrough at the beginning of the third quarter, but Tabor was not far behind, adding a touchdown, making the score 27-17 in favor of the Swedes. Yet another Tabor touchdown brought them within three, and the Blue Jays would gain possession after a Baker interception. Tabor took their first lead of the game after an early fourth quarter touchdown, making the score 31-27. The Swedes answered right back as Malcolm scored his second touchdown of the night. Senior Michael Terry came up huge with an interception and a 39-yard touchdown run back, putting Bethany up 41-31. Tabor cut the Swede lead to four after another Blue Jay touchdown, and gained possession after a Baker interception. However, Bethany would get the ball back after freshman Milton Collins forced a fumble and sophomore DeWayne Autry recovered. Keeping the chains moving with the clock counting down, the Bethany offense held on, giving the Swedes a hard-fought 41-37 victory.

"Robert Anderson did a nice job for us with nine catches for over 100 yards," said head coach Jamie Cruce. "Oshane Malcolm also ran well. After watching film, the offense was productive through the game, excluding a portion of the third quarter."

Baker threw 23 completions out of 43 attempts, totaling 301 total yards. Malcolm ran for 123 yards on 29 attempts. Anderson had nine catches for 102 yards while junior Matthew Redding added 79 yards and senior Cordell Hammond tacked on 50, both off of three catches apiece.

Defensively, senior Jeffrey Simplice had six unassisted and one assisted tackle. Terry calculated four unassisted tackles and two assisted while sophomore Quentin Hoskins chalked up five unassisted tackles. Terry had the clutch interception and Collins the game-saving forced fumble while Autry recovered two fumbles on the night.

Bethany is now 2-0 in the KCAC. They return to Lindsborg to host MacMurray College on Saturday, September 26 for a 1:30 p.m. showdown.

"Our defense was not very good this week, with mental letdowns and blown assignments," Cruce said. "Michael Terry did extremely well. But we need to work on reads and reactions. We also need to work on our situational offense, and understanding downs and distances."
