With a crucial 2-0 start under their belt, the Bethany College football team returned home this past weekend. The Swedes hosted an afternoon contest with non-conference opponent MacMurray College. MacMurray plays in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference of NCAA Div. III.

In nothing short of an offensive dominating game, the Swedes found the end zone countless times in a high-scoring 63-34 non-conference win over MacMurray.

MacMurray would score the first touchdown of the game as they found the end zone after stripping the ball from the Swedes. More than halfway into the first quarter, Bethany got on the board as senior Steven Baker connected with junior Robert Anderson for a seven-yard touchdown pass before kicker Alex Fambrough added the PAT. Six minutes later, Baker scored on a one-yard run as Fambrough kicked his second PAT of the night.

However, Bethany found themselves down 18-14 before sophomore Oshane Malcolm crossed the goal line on a two-yard run at the beginning of the second quarter. Baker would then find junior Adam Garza on a five-yard touchdown pass and Anderson on a 54-yard booming touchdown heave as Fambrough added three more PAT's, giving Bethany a 21-point shutout second quarter.

The Swedes would not stop there as Malcolm ran the pigskin in for a one-yard third quarter touchdown, followed by another Fambrough kick. Sophomore DeWayne Autry broke through for a 60-yard touchdown punt return. Baker hooked with senior wide receiver Cordell Hammond for the third touchdown of the quarter, and after both of Fambrough PAT's, the Swedes were up 56-26 going into the fourth.

MacMurray would score eight points in the fourth, but Bethany was able to hang on for the "W" as freshman wide receiver Brandon Martino caught a 42-yard touchdown toss from Baker, complete with Fambrough's ninth successful PAT.

"Our kickoff team struggled a bit," said head coach Jamie Cruce. "We struggled to put our defense in good positions, and our defense gave up four touchdowns."

Baker had a solid performance, completing 26 of 35 attempts for 329 yards and five touchdowns. Anderson had eight receptions for a team-leading 125 yards, followed by Garza, who totaled 79 yards off seven catches. Malcolm led the Swede rushing game with 47 yards off 16 carries and two touchdowns.

"They limited our running game a bit," said Cruce, "but it also opened up our passing game. However, we still had several short rushing touchdowns."

Junior Jeffrey Simplice headed the Bethany defense with seven unassisted tackles and three assisted. Autry added five unassisted and two assisted on the afternoon.

"We are still working on some alignment corrections," Cruce said.

The Swedes are now 2-0 in the KCAC and 3-0 overall. They next head to cross-town rival Kansas Wesleyan University on October 3 for a 5 p.m. contest.

"We played hard," Cruce said, "but we have a lot of tough opponents ahead of us."
