The Bethany College golf team traveled to Winfield to compete in the South Central Kansas Fall Invitational this past week. The Swedes finished in fifth place with a total of 317 in round one and 320 in round two, combining for a 637. Senior Leslie Bonvillain tied for fourth after shooting a 77 in round one and 76 in round two for a total of 153.
"We certainly did not play up to our expectations or that of a nationally ranked team," said head coach and Bethany College athletic director Jon Daniels. "Certainly the course played a large part in that as it was set up very difficult and only the home team knows how to play it in those conditions as they practice on it every day.
"All of the scores were high and there were several nationally ranked teams there," said Daniels.
The squad placed third out of five at Nebraska Wesleyan earlier in September, in which sophomore Jack Hiscock won the tournament at seven under par. Bonvillain was tied for tenth, senior Ian Ford tied for 14th, junior Brock Bullard tied for 22nd, and freshman Tyler Maydew tied for 28th. Bethany then finished third out of 17 a Central Christian College. Senior Thomas Fernandes placed seventh, sophomore Adam Glover finished 15th, and sophomore Ethan Miller tied for 16th.
"We have had some good rounds, but are not putting together an entire tournament," Daniels said. "We are certainly finding out our weaknesses and working on those on days we are not at tournaments and hopefully that will begin to produce results."
The Swedes host the Bethany Fall Invitational October 5 in Salina.
"I expect us to be in the hunt nationally by spring," said Daniels. "They are a very good group of young men to work with every day."
