Fresh off their second win of 2009, the Bethany College women's soccer team hit the turf again this week. The Swedes hosted Manhattan Christian College on Tuesday, Northwestern Oklahoma on Thursday and travelled to Oklahoma Wesleyan Saturday for three non-conference showdowns. The Swedes came away with three wins.
"It was a long week with three games and only one day between all of them," said head coach Steve Moore.
With two scoreless halves, Bethany's nail-biter with Manhattan Christian College went into double overtime before freshman Jordan Lillie scored off an assist from sophomore Megan Xavier in the 105th minute to give the Swedes an exciting 1-0 victory. Outshooting Manhattan Christian 24-10, Bethany grabbed their second win in a row as junior goalkeeper Sarah Garlock totaled six saves.
"It was a good win, but we suffered a big team loss as sophomore Tara Rose tore her ACL and is out for the season," Moore said. "Megan Xavier did a good job filling in, but we will definitely miss Tara as we are starting our conference play soon."
Bethany battled it out with Northwestern Oklahoma State University in Lindsborg on Thursday. After a scoreless first half, the Swede offense heated up in the second half. Xavier scored in the 50th minute off a Lillie assist. Xavier again found the net nearly 30 minutes later with the help of sophomore Jordan Johnson, giving Bethany the 2-0 "W." Garlock had another solid performance with seven saves.
The squad finished off the week with a trip to Oklahoma Wesleyan University on Saturday. Bethany stayed hot as Xavier broke the scoreless game, netting a pass from Lillie. Lillie would later score the final goal of the game off an assist from freshman Shannon Singleton, extending the Swedes' win streak to four with the 2-0 victory.
Bethany is now 5-3-1 overall. The Swedes begin their conference schedule this week as they travel to Southwestern College on Saturday, October 3 at 2 pm.
"It was a pretty good week with three shutouts," Moore said. "It will be good to have a week off, and time to heal up before we start our conference play."
