The Bethany College volleyball team aimed to regain their focus this week as the squad continued their conference play. The Swedes started the week off with a trip north to Salina to face rival Kansas Wesleyan University Tuesday night.

The Swedes were able to snap a five-matching losing streak in their meeting with the Coyotes. After being down 18-17 in game one, Bethany scored eight of the last ten points to grab a 25-20 win. Again falling behind 13-10 in the second game, the squad put together an 8-0 run, thanks in part to freshman Sam Andersen serving seven points, to chalk up the 25-18 victory. The Swedes completed the sweep with a 25-18 "W" in game three. Bethany led 10-4 early, but Kansas Wesleyan closed the gap and pulled within one before the Swedes held on for the final win of the match.

Head coach Nathalea Stephenson cited the variety from the setters and the strong play of senior Kristi Parker as the difference maker in the match.

Parker led the Bethany offense with a commanding 11 kills, followed by senior Megan Wendell with nine. Junior April Roble and Andersen each added six. Freshman Teresa Read chalked up 19 assists while Wendell tacked on 16. Senior Katy Troutman totaled 20 digs on the night while sophomore Hannah Hemberger contributed 13 and Andersen had ten. Senior Carrie DeRoo, Wendell, and Parker each had two assisted blocks.

The squad then hosted Friends University Thursday evening, hoping to continue their winning trend. However, the composure of the Friends Falcons proved to be too much for the Swedes. Bethany won game one 25-21, but then could not seem to gain a lead, playing catch-up ball for the final three games of the match, falling 19-25, 21-25, 19-25.

"We went four with Friends, but I really felt we let down at key times in the games," Stephenson said. "We have been doing that all season, we will get good plays, and then sit back on our heels and are not aggressive."

Andersen threw down 13 kills as Parker trailed with 12. Wendell totaled 18 assists as Read added 15. Troutman headed Bethany's defense with 21 digs while Andersen had 16 and Wendell added ten. Parker and DeRoo both made their presence known on the net, each with four assisted blocks. Roble and Pele-Lafo each added three assisted blocks.

The Swedes finished the week with a trip to Hillsboro in a head-to-head Saturday afternoon battle with the KCAC first place Tabor College Blue Jays. Bethany again struggled to gain momentum against Tabor's strong offensive attack as they fell 17-25, 16-25, 13-25.

"The scores don't show it, but at times we played well against Tabor," said Stephenson. "We had some long rallies, but just didn't finish. We would let the ball drop, or hit it out of bounds. We really need to focus on finishing."

Pele-Lafo and Parker each had four kills while Roble had three. Read and Wendell both had five assists while Troutman chalked up 13 digs. DeRoo tallied five unassisted blocks while Andersen had four.

Bethany is now 3-4 in the KCAC, putting them in seventh place, and 5-16 overall. Bethany hosts Bethel College on Tuesday, October 6 before traveling to Ottawa University on Thursday, October 8. Both matches are scheduled for 7 p.m.
