The Bethany College men's soccer team hoped to turn things around after two tough losses the week before as they started their conference schedule. The Swedes headed to Winfield for a Saturday night showdown with KCAC foe Southwestern College.
Looking for their first conference win, the squad did just that. In fact, Bethany chalked up their first KCAC win in nearly four years. The Swedes last beat Tabor College 2-1 in overtime on October 14, 2005.
"We really possessed well throughout the entire match as we outshot them 17-7 and 6-3 which were on goal," said head coach Jeff Kidd. "This was one of our best possession games all year long. We were really calm with the ball and were more intent on holding onto it rather than moving forward at all times."
Bethany got on the board early in the game as freshman Johnny Nuthall tapped a goal off an assist from sophomore Darren Gillmore. On a nicely placed pass from Gillmore, both he and Nuthall slipped past the Southwestern backline and put the Swedes up 1-0. Just over 20 minutes later, senior Dan Warner scored off a Nuthall pass that hit the referee before Warner smoked a shot just beyond the 18-yard box.
"It seemed fitting that a senior like Dan would step up and put away the game winner for us!" Kidd said. "I was very proud of the effort he gave and that all my seniors give on a regular basis."
The Moundbuilders would answer back right out of the halftime gate, cutting the Bethany lead to 2-1. However, the Swedes would score again as freshman Corey Lemle headed a ball into the net off a corner kick from freshman Ryker Ferraro. That would prove to be the last score of the contest as Bethany grabbed their first KCAC win with a 3-1 victory against Southwestern.
"I was really impressed with the way my young men played today," Kidd said. "Coming into the game, we were having some issues with focusing. We made a few adjustments to our warm up to better prepare ourselves for the game, and my kids really took them to heart. They came out with more focus and determination than I have seen from them this year."
The squad is now 1-0 in the KCAC and 5-4 overall. Bethany hosts their first KCAC match Wednesday, October 7 against Ottawa University at 7 p.m. before ending the week with a trip to Tabor College on Saturday, October 10 for an 8 p.m. match-up with the Blue Jays.
"I hope this is only a sign of things to come," said Kidd. "This was a great day for our soccer program and a step forward that was long overdue. They really deserved this win and I am extremely happy for them!"
