Fresh off their first conference win in nearly four years, the Bethany College men's soccer team clung to their sweet taste of victory and was hungry for more. The squad hosted Ottawa University Wednesday night.

"This was a team effort that I am very proud about," said head coach Jeff Kidd. "We came prepared and ready to play today."

On a chilly and rainy night, the two teams went head-to-head in a hard-fought, scoreless first half. Despite being outshot 15-11 by Ottawa, the Bethany squad proved to just need one key shot on goal as freshman leading scorer Johnny Nuthall netted a pass from junior Gildardo Navarro with only 11 minutes left to play. The Swedes would go on to win the tight contest 1-0, holding Ottawa winless in KCAC play as of Wednesday.

"As a team, I hope this teaches us that we can play with anyone when we are up to the challenge," said Kidd.

Senior Logan Adams chalked up six saves on the night, proving to be his first conference shutout. "I was really happy for Logan today," Kidd said. "He puts in hard work on the field every day and really deserved this shutout."

On Hyllningsfest Saturday, Bethany headed to Tabor College for a match-up with the Blue Jays. "We didn't start the game too bad," said Kidd, "but we did give up an early goal about 15 minutes in to make it 0-1. We just never seemed to settle into the game. We were chasing right from the beginning and that never changed.

Adams would go down minutes later with a leg injury, and did not return to the match. "We would never bounce back from this mishap, giving up 6 more goals in the game," said Kidd.

Falling 7-0 and outshot 20-8, Bethany's Adams, senior Richard Napierkowski, and junior A.J. Cordova combined for six saves on 13 shots on goal.

"When Logan went down, you could see our teams head drop with him," Kidd said. "It is tough when your starting goalkeeper gets injured, but you have to deal with it and move forward. I know we will make the necessary adjustments and adapt to them quickly. We have been resilient all year."

Bethany is now 2-1 in the KCAC, putting them in fourth place, and 6-5 overall. The squad hosts the University of St. Mary on Wednesday, October 7 and Sterling College on Saturday, October 10, with start times at 7:30 p.m. and 7 p.m., respectively.

"(Saturday) we were not in the right mindset when we stepped onto the field," said Kidd, "and that is all my fault. However, I know we will be prepared much better and bounce back against St. Mary on Wednesday."
