Looking to bounce back after a gut-wrenching first season loss to Bethel in week five, the Bethany College football team was ready to get back to the "W" column. The Swedes hit the road to Southwestern College Saturday afternoon.

The previously 0-5 Southwestern Moundbuilders found their offensive rhythm and broke their winless streak, defeating Bethany 34-21.

"It looked as though we weren't real sharp reading keys," said head coach Jamie Cruce. "We were creeping in the backfield at the secondary."

Saturday proved to be a struggle for the Swedes as they could not seem to find the end zone. "The offense had some real good drives," Cruce said. "But we didn't finish. We would move the ball well, and finish with a field goal."

It took three field goals for Bethany, down 21-9, before they crossed the goal line in the second quarter with a pass play from senior quarterback Steven Baker to junior wide receiver Sean Johnson. Southwestern, who again scored early in the third, held Bethany scoreless in the second half until the Swedes mustered a rushing touchdown by freshman Johnny Harris, Jr. late in the fourth.

"We need to make sure when we are in the red zone, we are putting points on the board," said Cruce. "We struggled off man-to-man coverage."

Bethany is now 3-2 in the KCAC, putting them in fourth place, and 4-2 overall. The squad returns home to host Friends University on Saturday, October 24 at 1:30 p.m.

"Friends is a talented team," Cruce said, "so we are going to have to play well. We need to finish drives, and work on our coverage. That has been a focus all year, so it is nothing new."
