After a split last week in KCAC play, the Bethany College men's soccer team was ready to get the ball rolling their way. The Swedes hosted the University of St. Mary Wednesday night.
"I was really impressed with the effort we gave as a unit," said head coach Jeff Kidd. "We came off of a hard loss at Tabor, but wasted no time bouncing back."
In a back and forth game, Bethany got on the board early in the second half as senior Emeka Obiagwu scored off a freshman Johnny Nuthall assist. However, St. Mary would answer back with two goals.
"We really played well defensively, only giving up two shots in the second half," Kidd said. "Unfortunately they netted both opportunities."
The Swedes were unable to find the net again and went on to fall 2-1 to the Spires of St. Mary. "It was very unfortunate that we lost this game the way we did after playing so well," said Kidd. "You have to give credit to St. Mary for taking full advantage of both their second half opportunities. It was a well played match by both teams."
Bethany rounded out the week by battling Sterling College at home Saturday night.
"This was a huge game for us tonight, and I made sure to let my team know that before the game," Kidd said. "I really like the way we came out of the gate and controlled much of the possession for the first half. This game was an exciting match to watch from start to finish. It was a hard fought match on both sides of the ball with two passionate teams fighting for the win."
Bethany found themselves down 1-0 at halftime. "We made one late mistake in the half and Sterling took advantage," said Kidd. "At half time we made sure to focus on the positive things we were doing."
The Warriors would again score with only 23 minutes left in regulation. "I feel that we came out and played well in the second half only to give up another goal to go down 0-2," Kidd said. "My young men really went to work after going down by two goals."
The Swedes would at last find their spark, tying the game 2-2 off a Nuthall goal and Obiagwu assist and an Obiagwu score on a pass from junior Gildardo Navarro. Outshooting Sterling 22-12 overall and 10-5 on goal, Navarro nearly won the game for Bethany as his shot in overtime hit the post. However, neither team scored and the contest ended in a 2-2 tie.
"Both Johnny and Emeka had really solid games for us up top," said Kidd. "I was proud of the effort they gave along with our goalkeeper senior Logan Adams. He was playing with an injury, yet laid it all out on the line for the team!"
The squad ended the week at 2-2-1 in the KCAC, putting them in sixth place, and 6-6-1 overall.
"It was great to see the fight that they have when there back is against the wall," Kidd said. "I hope we can continue to play with such passion as we head forward with our season."
Aiming for their first win in nearly two weeks, Bethany hosted St. Gregory's University Monday afternoon. A strong St. Gregory's offensive attack put the Swedes down 3-0 at half. St. Gregory would again score before Nuthall netted a pass from Navarro, cutting the lead to 4-1. However, St. Gregory would tack on two more second half goals, defeating Bethany 6-1.
Nuthall is now sixth in the NAIA in shots on goal per game and seventh in shots per game.
The Swedes then returned to KCAC play, heading to Bethel College Wednesday evening. The squad was able to get back on track despite poor conditions with wind and pouring rain. Bethany netted a free kick by Navarro with 17 minutes left in the half before shutting out Bethel in the second half for the 1-0 win. Adams chalked up six saves on the night.
"I was really proud of the team defensive effort against Bethel," said Kidd. "Logan had an exceptional game for us in the net. When Logan plays well, our team feeds off of his energy. It was great to see my young men give such a great effort from start to finish."
Bethany ended the week with a home contest against cross-town rival Kansas Wesleyan University. The strong Coyote offensive attack proved to be too much for the Swedes as they lost 6-0. "We did not play very well at all," Kidd said. "KWU took advantage of their opportunities and jumped out to an early lead that they only increased throughout the game."
Adams totaled seven saves on 13 shots on goal. Nuthall tallied five shots, four of which were on goal.
"We didn't have our normal team chemistry today," said Kidd, "and they took advantage of that. I look for us to bounce back quickly."
The Swedes are now 3-3-1 in the KCAC, giving them sixth place, and 7-8-1 overall. The squad hosts Friends University on senior night, Wednesday, October 28 at 8 p.m. before playing their last KCAC game at McPherson College on Saturday, October 31 at 8 p.m.
"We have a big game against Friends on Wednesday," Kidd said, "and I believe my team will be ready to give their best effort."
