The Bethany College volleyball team looked to make it three wins in a row as they traveled to Southwestern College on Tuesday.
The Swedes kicked off the week with a tight sweep of Southwestern 25-20, 25-20, 25-22.
Senior Kristi Parker led the offense with nine kills, followed by senior Serah Pele-Lafo with eight. Senior Megan Wendell added seven kills while junior April Roble and sophomore Hannah Hemberger each tacked on six. Freshman Theresa Read totaled 20 assists on the night while Wendell contributed 18. Senior Katy Troutman recorded 17 digs, and Wendell followed with 11. Senior Carrie DeRoo held down the net with three assisted blocks, and Pele-Lafo and Parker both added two assisted blocks.
Bethany rounded off the week with a trip to McPherson College, aiming to get even with the Bulldogs after falling to them in a five-game match earlier in the season. However, history would prove to repeat itself in the close Thursday evening match. The Swedes lost games one and two 25-23, 25-18 before bouncing back with games three and four wins 25-16, 25-17. However, Bethany could not close out a night with the "W" as they lost the ever-so-dreaded fifth game 15-9.
"We just didn't play well period," said head coach Nathalea Stephenson. "We didn't pass well, and we didn't bring our game."
Pele-Lafo threw down 15 kills, followed by Parker with 12. Wendell put up 26 assists while Read tacked on 13. Andersen headed the defense with 24 digs as Troutman contributed 21. Parker stuffed an impressive ten assisted blocks on the night. Andersen and Pele-Lafo each put down four assisted blocks while Wendell added three and freshman Shelby Broeckelman had two assisted and two unassisted blocks.
"It's disappointing, because I felt like we could have won and moved up in conference," Stephenson said.
Bethany is now 6-8 in the KCAC, putting them in sixth place, and 9-20 overall. The Swedes head south to Friends University on Wednesday, October 28 at 7 p.m. before hosting Tabor College and Oklahoma Baptist University on Halloween Saturday at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., respectively.
"We have to come out every single game we play and bring it," said Stephenson. "We need to pass, set, serve, play aggressive, and play with passion and heart. I'm just not seeing it."
