The Bethany College women's soccer team kicked off their last week of conference play by hosting Friends University on Tuesday on senior night.
On the chilly evening, the Swedes and Falcons went head-to-head in nothing short of a tight and thrilling match. The Falcons would eventually net the only goal of the game with less than ten minutes left in the game, defeating Bethany 1-0.
"We played well," said head coach Steve Moore. "We had one breakdown at the very end, which was more indicative of our lack of subs. We did okay with injuries the first half of the season, but were really hurting the second half of the season when we got into conference play."
The squad headed to McPherson College on Halloween Saturday for their final KCAC match-up without Moore. Head men's soccer coach Jeff Kidd coached the game in Moore's absence.
On a mild Halloween night, McPherson netted three balls in the first half. Despite being outshot 22-6, Bethany would hold the Bulldogs scoreless in the second, but were unable to tack on any goals of their own, falling 3-0 in their final game of the season.
"We had a couple of defensive lapses in the first half," Moore said. "And we also had a couple of breakdowns which allowed them to score again in the second half."
The Swedes end 2009 at 1-8 in the KCAC, at ninth place, and 6-11-1 overall.
"Though we didn't win as many games this year, this was one of the most fun and dedicated teams I have ever coached, and it was a heck of a year," said Moore. "That makes looking forward to next year all the more possible. The season went fast and I can't believe we are already looking forward to the off-season. We have high expectations. I am really excited for bigger numbers as recruiting is already going well."
