Hoping to bounce back after a close five-game loss to McPherson, the Bethany College volleyball team traveled to Friends University Wednesday evening.
After Friends jumped out to a 2-0 match lead, defeating the Swedes 25-15, 25-17, Bethany fought back and won game three 25-18. However, that proved to be the unlucky score of the night as the Falcons in turn defeated Bethany 25-18 in game four, giving Friends the match win.
Senior Kristi Parker led with ten kills, followed by seniors Megan Wendell with seven and Serah Pele-Lafo with six. Wendell totaled 19 assists as freshman Theresa Read added ten. Senior Katy Troutman tallied 21 digs as Wendell contributed 11 and freshman Sam Andersen had ten. Pele-Lafo threw down six assisted blocks. Parker added three assisted blocks, and senior Carrie DeRoo and freshman Shelby Broeckelman each tacked on two assisted blocks.
Bethany ended the week by hosting Tabor College on Halloween morning. The Swedes jumped out to an early lead, winning games one and two 25-23, 25-13. The Blue Jays avoided the sweep with a 25-22 game three victory, but Bethany turned right around and won game four 25-20, breaking their two=match losing streak.
Pele-Lafo led the offense with ten kills, followed by Parker with eight. In a balanced offensive attack, Wendell tacked on seven kills while junior April Roble, Andersen, and DeRoo all added six. Wendell put up 22 assists with Read adding 14. Troutman totaled 18 digs in the match as Wendell and Andersen added 13 and ten, respectively. Parker made her presence known at the net, throwing down 11 assisted blocks. Wendell contributed another five assisted blocks, Pele-Lafo added four, and Roble and DeRoo each tallied three.
The squad rounded out the day with a non-conference match against Oklahoma Baptist University that afternoon. OBU proved to be too much for the Swedes as they swept Bethany 25-11, 25-21, 25-12.
"This was a really good win for us," said head coach Nathalea Stephenson. "We just all pulled together and were on the same page."
Parker had seven kills while Roble and Pele-Lafo each had five. Wendell and Read chalked up nine and eight assists, respectively. Troutman had 14 digs while Wendell and DeRoo each had an assisted block.
"We passed really well," Stephenson said. "Our back row did extremely well. Katy (Troutman), Sam (Andersen), and April (Roble) did a great job getting the ball to our setters. Kristi (Parker) did a nice job blocking and Serah's (Pele-Lafo) blocking really came on."
The Swedes are now 7-9 in the KCAC, giving them seventh place, and 10-22 overall. The squad enters their last week of KCAC play by traveling to Bethel on Tuesday, November 3 before returning home to go head-to-head with Ottawa University Thursday, November 5. Both matches are scheduled for 7 p.m.
"We are tied for fifth," said Stephenson, "so we really need to take care of business and beat both these teams. They are two winnable matches. If do that, then we wrap up fifth by ourselves."
