Tied for fifth in the KCAC, the Bethany College volleyball team entered a last crucial week of conference play. Fresh off a win over top KCAC ranked Tabor College, the Swedes kicked off the week with a trip to Bethel College Tuesday night.

Bethel came out firing, winning games one and two 25-12, 25-16. The Swedes briefly found their rhythm and battled back, winning game three 25-17. However, the Threshers immediately got back on track and won game four and the match 25-18.

Senior Kristi Parker and freshman Samantha Andersen led the offense with five kills, followed by senior Serah Pele-Lafo with four and seniors Megan Wendell and Carrie DeRoo with three each. Freshman Theresa Read chalked up ten assists while Wendell added eight. Senior Katy Troutman tallied 13 assists on the night and Pele-Lafo put down three assisted blocks.

Bethany closed out regular season KCAC play by hosting Ottawa University Thursday night. The Swedes stayed close with the Braves, but were unable to gain and keep a lead as they fell 26-24, 25-19, 25-23.

"I thought we were going to, or could, win," said head coach Nathalea Stephenson. "Our young kids stepped in and were a little scared or nervous. They did the best they could, and we needed to rally around them and we didn't. I am very disappointed in the way we've been playing."

Parker, DeRoo, Pele-Lafo, and junior April Roble all had six kills in the match. Wendell totaled 15 assists as Read contributed nine. Andersen and Roble both had nine digs while Parker and Pele-Lafo both put down four blocks.

"The last two matches we just have not all been on the same page at the exact same time," Stephenson said. "Our focus is not where it needs to be. We are not taking care of business on the floor. It must be everyone, not just a couple people, if we are going to win."

The Swedes finished 7-11 in the KCAC, finishing at sixth place, and 10-24 overall. The squad is preparing to face Sterling College on Tuesday, November 9 in the first round of the KCAC post-season.

"Anything can happen at any time," said Stephenson. "I know right now their outside hitter who beat us and has hurt us the last two times we have played them is struggling with shoulder injuries. Anything can happen at any time. We need to get out and play. I think, and know, we can win, it just depends on what team shows up to play."
